January 14th (Friday) - Peter Rowan and the Tony Rice Quartet - at the Variety Playhouse: 8:30pm, $20 A major cult figure among progressive bluegrass aficionados, Peter Rowan has participated in a number of adventurous projects since the late '60s and '70s, such as Old And In The Way with Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, and has embarked on a highly productive solo career. Primarily a guitarist, Rowan also sings, yodels, and plays various members of the mandolin family. Tony Rice is one of bluegrass' most inventive flatpicking guitar players. Although he's displayed a mastery of the genre's traditions, Rice set the standard for more contemporary styles. A former member of the Bluegrass Alliance, the David Grisman Quintet, J.D.
